No franchise tag for Matt Flynn
Posted by Josh Alper on March 5, 2012, 4:50 PM EST
No one is going to have to trade for Matt Flynn this offseason.
The Packers elected not to use their franchise tag on the backup quarterback, which means he’ll hit the market as an unrestricted free agent on March 13th. The decision wasn’t unexpected, although Green Bay likely considered using the tag in order to get something more than a mid-round draft pick as compensation when another team moves to make Flynn their starting quarterback.
Franchising Flynn would have carried a $ 14.4 million price tag, a pretty hefty meatball for a team with other salary cap concerns. They would have had to release other players by March 13th to make room for Flynn and then they would have to hold off on making moves while waiting to deal him. Any team looking to make a trade for Flynn would know that the Packers had to make a deal quickly to open up cap space, something that could lead to drawn-out negotiations that hurt the team’s ability to address other needs.
Flynn will be one of the hottest names on the free agent market. The Dolphins, Seahawks, Browns and Redskins have all been talked about as potential bidders for his services.

Redskins put franchise tag on Fred Davis

It’s official. The Washington Redskins have placed the franchise tag on tight end Fred Davis, according to multiple league sources.
The Redskins will give Davis a guaranteed salary of $ 5.4 million in 2012 despite the fact that he was suspended four games in 2011 for violating the substance-abuse policy. He’s one more violation away from a one-year suspension.
The good news, if there would be any, is that the Redskins would keep their $ 5.4 million.

The contract saga between DeSean Jackson and the Philadelphia Eagles took another turn Thursday, as the team announced that it has placed its franchise tag on the enigmatic wideout, making him the first player to be franchised this offseason.
If Jackson and the Eagles are unable to agree to a long-term deal, then Jackson will earn a 2012 salary of $ 9.4 million — the franchise tag figure for wideouts under the new collective bargaining agreement.
Jackson told the Philadelphia Inquirer he is honored to be the team’s franchise player, adding “I look forward to getting a long term deal done soon and being an Eagle for many years to come.”
“We want DeSean to be an Eagle for the long haul and this is a step in the right direction to accomplish that,” Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said in a statement. “DeSean is a talented player and a proven playmaker in this league and we look forward to him continuing his career in Philadelphia. It’s our understanding that he has the same desire. We will continue our efforts on getting a long-term deal done with him.”
Jackson made it clear after the Eagles beat Washington in their season finale on Jan. 1 that he would accept the tag.
“I hope I will be here,” he said. “These guys on this team and the fans, this is home.”
Jackson made the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2010, posting career totals of 229 catches, 4,085 yards and 21 touchdowns along the way.
Jackson had 58 receptions for 961 yards with four touchdowns during the 2011 season, which was muddled by an ongoing contract dispute between Jackson and the Eagles that placed his future with the team into question.
